Fun With “The Bible” Part I

I’m thinking of making a regular segment in my blog that revolves around the hypocrisy of the Bible and those who claim to follow it. If you think about it, Christians and other religious parishioners, are about the most biblically corrupt bunch to ever walk this earth.

I grew up in a Lutheran household. Lutheranism is a form of Protestantism, which came into being by a German friar named Martin Luther. It’s different than standard Catholicism based on authority in the church and a doctrine known as “Justification.” To be fair, I don’t believe in any of that horseshit. My father attempted to become a pastor at our church and was promptly denied because of his alcoholism and the fact that he beat my half-brother and myself nearly to death on multiple occasions. We stopped going to church after that, and I probably became a better human being for it.

But sometimes, just sometimes, I like to thumb through the Bible and try to find just what people see in it. It’s astounding what you might read in the book that is supposed to act as a moral compass for so many people around the world. The problem is the people who claim to follow “the good book” are doing anything but.

Consider our current administration. Dear Leader has begun a crusade against “illegal aliens.” However, he’s not simply targeting people who are here illegally, he’s targeting anyone and everyone that looks like they’re from one of the countries south of us. “Well, it’s our God-given right to defend our country from aliens!” they often shout. But I bet not a single one of these Jesus freaks can even quote what the Bible says about it.

I just happened to be thumbing through my wife’s father’s (rest his soul) copy of the Bible that his parents gave to him. It’s got both the Old and New Testaments in it, but I’m focusing on the Old for this little journey. Let’s take a trip to page 92, Leviticus 19: 33 – 37. And bear with me, the language can be a little difficult at times.

Leviticus 19

33: And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him.

34: But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Ē’-gŷpt: I am the Lord your God.

35: Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure.

36: Just balance, just weight, a just ē’-phäh and just hin, shall ye have; I am the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Ē’-gŷpt.

37: Therefore shall ye observe all my statutes, all my judgments, and do them; I am the Lord.

Translation:

People (read: immigrants) in your country should be treated as though they were born in the same country as you, because you, too, come from somewhere else. American people have “no right” to the land and therefore cannot judge those who live on it with them. Get your heads out of your collective conservative anuses and start treating people the way “the good book” intended for you to. If you’re so devout, why are you forcing people out of a country that your ancestors fled to at some point in their lives?
